BOO! BOO! BOO!
Now, I'm not coming from any high horse here. Manila is not exactly the ideal template when it comes to civilized societies, but after these two issues, I really have to let out a resounding "Boo! Hiss! Spit!" to two of my favorite neighbors, Singapore and Thailand.Singapore, you are such a developed society, why must you still condone state sponsored killings? If you were a backward third world state with mindless crime on a daily basis, I wouldn't be surprised. But you are now an economic powerhouse and a social development success story and capital punishment just doesn't jive with this new image. Really, it's issues like these that only prove you haven't come too far from the original barbaric port of pirates from whence you came. All the Grand Hyatts and Chanel Boutiques that line your boulevards will never buy you a heart or soul. Readers, click here if you want to lodge a protest against the killing of 25-year old Nguyen Tuong Van (who the state of Singapore hanged at six am today, December 2, 2005) . He was in transit for crissake...
And to Mr. Thaksin Shinawatra of Thailand. You can just kiss my click here. Prove it. Jerk.
Thank you goldtoe.net for the boo! hiss! spit! picture.

Thaksin is a sore loser. He has no business lecturing us about fair play when he is being charged with corruption and human rights abuses. His family's conglomerate, Shin Corporation, has been benefitting a lot since he assumed power.
Mr. Thaksin is also persecuting the media who exposed his shenanigans; jailing freedom of speech activists; and killing people in the southern part of that country.
Loser.
I thought Thaksin said he will shut his mouth until his stars are no longer aligned! What a dope! Now see what he has caused!
It is not without reason that LKY insisted that the chinese maintain a numerical majority over the malays and indians because he knew, as it has been for 2000 years, that the chinese are well-trained in turning a blind eye to anything the government does. They don't question evils. They just question how they can negotiate through them - even if this means stepping on everyone else.
The chinese culture trains people into being like the proverbial 3 monkeys. That is why LKY and son brought back the chinese culture in full force, started the chinese elite schools, the speak mandarin campaign, instituted higher chinese, forbade them from substituting other languages for 'their own', allowed a few dedicated chinese channels on tv, allows the chinese to discriminate against all races as and when they please in the job market whilst saying that it is none of their business, saturating the population with china citizens and inviting many of them to become singapore citizens, etc, etc, etc. This way, all potentially influential and 'troublesome' 'races' would be gradually pushed to the underclass or leave the country so that the current emperor Lee Hsien Loong can rule and pass on the reins to the herd to the next and next and next for the next 2000 years.
These things escapes the world's attention while the world is unaware that the basis for such nonsense is chinese culture. Of course, atrocities take place in other non-chinese cultures, but all that shows is that atrocities have a few cultural bases - one of which is the mentioned culture. That is why a Chinese Humanitarian is an oxymoron. Chinese civilisation would not have survived intact and unchanging for 2000 years or so if the emperors had not been successful in instituting a culture of apathy and intellectual and humanitarian docility and myopia. That is why 2000 years later, this poor mate of ours was led to his death while these people just stuffed their faces with fishballs and noodles at their local cafes. The chinese becomes human the less chinese he becomes.
For the chinese whatever the emperor says is 'justice'. Don't forget, he's the 'Son of Heaven'. Any chinese emperor worthy of the throne is deemed worthy if he can keep it through any means, even if it means killing millions. Read your history book and you'll see that the above is ALL true.
I think everyone should emulate Singapore's strong stance against drug dealers/users. Its not the best way to curb trafficking of illegal drugs in the country but it sure makes these drug dealers and users to think twice. Its barbaric sure, but it is twice more barbaric what these drugs do to people and most especially kids.
Its about time we let these drug users/dealers know that the law means business.
I agree with carisse on the subject of drug dealers. I even once thought of a more barbaric way of dealing with them. Firing squad.
I am sorry about Nguyen Tuong Van's fate. I pray for his family.
But Singapore has to uphold its justice system. Law is law. We would do better if we implemented ours as well. Their system works for them. It teaches everyone to respect laws whether transient, tourist, resident, citizen, etc. The one and only time I went to Singapore, I researched about their laws for fear of even a slight transgression. I also made sure my bag was never out of my sight or slept en route just in case someone gets a nasty idea of slipping anything. I was even worried about my suitcase.
People should first read up on nguyen tuong van's particular case before rushing to judgment (www.smh.com.au). Singapore may have, over the years, modernised economically, but this stubborn adherence to the death penalty (no matter what the circumstances of a specific case are) is nothing short of barbaric and frankly, inhumane and morally reprehensible-- not a sign of a developed society at all.
I think with this latest moral scandal and its repercussions, there will be a rethinking of the death penalty within singapore-- as it applies to individual cases.
very hard to argue against joe's points re: the chinese. remember that during the darkest days of martial law, and even during the time of rising protests after the aquino assassination, all the chinese were concerned about was their income. They will side with whoever is in power (even hitler, but he would've thrown them to the gas chambers as well if there happened to be any chinese living in 1940s germany), as long as their business interests are protected. 'business first before all that humanitarian mumbo jumbo'. Of course as always there are exceptions to the rule, but i really can see joe's point, unfortunately.
as for thaksin, the perfect word, as torn's blog has pointed out, is: pikon.
p.s. thanks joe, for that enlightening angle on chinese culture. very good points all.
and thanks carlos, for bringing up the nguyen case and exposing singapore for its barbarism. you also had excellent points. This case is being brought up around the world apparently, and has hurt singapore in terms of image.
Believe me i'm no human rights crusader, and i believe in the death penalty for certain heinous crimes. Plus i have been to singapore several times in the past, and have enjoyed the cleanliness, modernity, and the food. but it has to be pointed out that underneath the polished veneer, singapore is still a morally backward society and pretty much a totalitarian state. their laws and socio-political system have not caught up with their economic development. Maybe the next generation will sort it out. but maybe not, if joe's assessment is accurate.
a life is a life. who decides that/when a life should stop?
i do not support singapore in this.
mitigating circumstances should have been considered which would have saved this guy from the death penalty. the punishment was too harsh.
was going to visit singapore but rethought this and decided i dont want spend my hardearned money on a country like singapore.
by the way, wasnt he caught in transit? arent airports neutral ground? a la the terminal.
Yeah. Remember Flor Contemplacion? She was sooo not guilty but they insisted on hanging her too because they don't want to seem soft on any crime - even if it was with reasonable doubt.
Killing Nguyen was their way of telling the world that they should not be used as a transit point for drugs.
But it also tells the world that they are a society with neither a heart nor soul.
Try Bali for a good vacation instead.
