UPDATE. UPDATE. UPDATE.

I received some interesting messages recently:

The first was this from some girl named A*****:
Subject: Paul VI Was Right

A response to: Under the Influence of Contraception
In his book, "Morals for Lay People" (1950s), Father Birngruber wrote: If artificial contraception becomes widely accepted, abortion on demand will follow as a natural consequence.
We should continually remind people how right Pope Paul VI and the Catholic Church has been about the terrible consequences of artificial contraception. We need the data at our fingertips, e.g. the divorce rate among those who practice Natural Family Planning is miniscule. Not so with those who use condoms and chemicals.

David A. Hogg

To which I replied:

STOP SENDING YOUR CATHOLIC DOGMA TO ME. I AM A CATHOLIC BUT YOUR VIEWS ARE MYOPIC AND I'M SORRY...JUST PLAIN WRONG. PASS THE REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH BILL NOW!! JOIN THE CAUSE.

SIGN THE PETITION HERE:
http://www.petitiononline.com/rhan2008/petition.html

Then she wrote back:

"I am praying for you everyday that someday you will realize what you are saying is not true."

a***** d*l*c***

Well, unfortunately for this poor misinformed self-righteous lady who doesnt' realize that contraception IS NOT ABORTION, I also received this text a few days ago from my friend Beth Angsioco who is a leading light in this advocacy:

"Today is a historic day for RH advocates, The HOR session (in Congres) saw the sponsorship speeches of Representatives Lagman and Garin on the RH bill after more than ten years of unrelenting advocacy work. Sponsorship speeches shall continue next week after which the debate shall continue. Rep. Lagman says that this is the start of the irreversible process of approving the bill."

Nevertheless, good news aside, a lot of work still needs to be done to show Congress that there is massive public support for this bill. Over 90%, if Pulse Asia is to be believed. Apparently, even the president secretly supports this bill.

So please, if you can, sign the petition above (or better yet, sign the hardcopy petition itself - I can send you copies to bring around your neighborhoods). Or join the plenary hall session (M-W 4pm onwards) to show your support. You can contact Mags Lopez at lopezmags@yahoo.com to see how you can volunteer in Congress.

Don't allow the Catholic Church to use heavy handed tactics to get their way again. The separation of Church and State in this country is in the constitution. Don't let them drag us back into the days of Noli Me Tangere again.

Remember, the bad guy was Padre Damaso.

call me Pro-Quality of Life. I am willing to bet that these people who are so gung-ho against the RH bill have never had to deal directly - and I mean in their OWN lives, not just observing the neighbors or the poor squatter family featured in the evening news - with the realities of not having enough to house, feed and clothe their kids.

Contraception is definitely not abortion. Those who believe so are seriously misinformed.

The Bible tells us to "be fruitful and multiply."

I say "OK, done. What's next on our to-do list?"

Pro Life are VIOLENT PEOPLE.
They are evil people.

They go to Abortion or OB/GYN clinics and starts shooting at patients. One incident happened in Boston in late 90's. John Salvo if I can recall.

They are more violent and evil than people who gets abortion.

To those Pro-life and Catholic priest.

Your Priest in Boston had been molesting and raping young kids as young as 4 years old in their churches. This is True, if you read the Boston Newspapers. This was a very big issue in America in the 90's and still going until now.

For the Pro-life it is not a sin to molest young kids but to have birth control pills is a big sin.

That's good news, Carlos! I did sign that petition, and posted about it, too. I hope I got even a few more people to sign up.

While it's also good news that GMA supports contraception, I wish it weren't a secret. But then, I'm not at all surprised. :-/

Hey, Beth Angsiaco's your friend? What a coincidence! We just ate dinner at her restaurant, Adarna, tonight, and really enjoyed it! I remembered the name because we were given calling cards. Have you been to Adarna? It's a charming place. I'm glad we went on a weeknight when it was almost empty, because we could look around at all the memorabilia, including in the function rooms, without bothering other diners.

hey carlos,it was good for me to read your blog today as i've been particularly sickened by religion these past, oh i dunno, 3 yrs of my life. religion is the one big reason we are asia's piss pot. far too many of us are too petrified, too lazy, too incurious to think. never mind think critically. and i point one big fat finger at the filipino's excessive, over-the-top, jeepney adorned religiosity. i am so blown away at what passes off as thinking in these part of the woods. religion shackles the minds so much so that a simple more kids means more resources needed equation is even debated about. whew! you'd think that would be such a no-brainer...but nooooo---hay the debates ad nauseum! and from PRIESTS/CLERGY/POPE! if you decide you can't fuck (in paper of course, fucking hypocrites), then don't. (ya, RIGHT...) but stay the hell out of my body. STAY THE HELL OUT OF MY BODY!!

i pass by this road everyday where i see a family living on the sidewalk and they have children from toddlers to teenagers.

allowing the children to live in this way is a lot worse than preventing people from becoming parents when they're not ready to support them.

i don't understand how some people can still be narrow-minded at this day and age.
