Hi, Carlos,

I'm either confused or cross-eyed or both, but there seem to be two different tours on Saturday morning, the 21st of Feb. 'If these walls could talk DELUXE' and 'La vida Imelda' seem to start within half-an-hour of each other that a.m. Does this mean you will be leading only one of them (and if so, which one)? Or has there been a typo? Please advise, as I am interested in doing both. Thanks v much.

Hello Carlos,

I've done your Intramuros tours a while back. I handle HRM students from Arellano University and for one of their subjects - Tour Guiding and Travel I want them to experience a tour with you. There are a total of 100 students and so I can split them into 50 students per group. I was thinking of having them go for the Intramuros Regular Walking Tour for dates Mar. 14 and 26. How are these dates in terms of number of people - can I book these dates for the students? Thanks remebaclig@yahoo.com

We were so happy to know that you moved your out of country tour on May 2009 already. May we ask if an Intramuros regular walking tour is possible on April 17, 2009, 9:30am. All participants are only available on the 17th of April and at the moment we don't have an alternative date, I've told these as well to Lesley, but until now we're still on tenterhooks waiting for your response if tour on April 17 is ok. Hope to hear from you soon. Thank you very much.

We went on the Downtown Express Tour a few weeks ago. The tour itself was great, and I would recommend it to anyone. However, I would suggest that anyone new to Manila who hasn't had experience at the local markets or being the only foreigner at one of the markets to wait until the summer months to take the tour so they aren't left in the Quiapo market area alone at night. Carlos kept repeating on the tour that that area has an unfair reputation for being unsafe and that we shouldn't be afraid of that area and should return on our own in the future. That was all well and good as we stood there as a group of 15 or so people, but once the group dissipated and we were on our own, we were fair game and the sellers and beggers became more aggressive. We made it to where we were going to wait for our ride and one of us split off to get some sodas while we waited. The man in line with him was shocked he was there at that time of day and kept telling him that he was not safe in that area alone. This was further reinforced by Filipino friends, who, when they heard we had been left there by our tour guide to wander alone after the tour was over, began listing off their own experiences at that market where people attempted to unzip their bags to get inside while our friends were haggling with a stall owner or attempting to pickpocket them.
This isn't a slam against the Philippines or Filipinos. There are areas of my own country I would think twice about going to and certainly would stay away from after dark. The end point of the Halo Halo/Downtown Express tour is one of those places.

We went on the Downtown Express Tour a few weeks ago. The tour itself was great, and I would recommend it to anyone.

Thank you for this. But allow me to reply to each of your points individally.

"However, I would suggest that anyone new to Manila who hasn't had experience at the local markets or being the only foreigner at one of the markets to wait until the summer months to take the tour so they aren't left in the Quiapo market area alone at night."

I do agree to stay when there is still light and I do try to make that clear. It's a great area in the daytime and I still totally stand by that belief. I know the tour you took, which is a revamped tour and now uses a kalesa and ends thirty minutes to an hour later than the old tour schedule. I will be moving it to the morning soon simply because of that realization. And when you say "left in the Quiapo market alone", I hope you don't mean "abandoned at the Quiapo area". I do double check if all guests have transportation back and if they need to find ways to do so. I NEVER just "leave" people in Quiapo, that much I can say to defend myself.

"Carlos kept repeating on the tour that that area has an unfair reputation for being unsafe and that we shouldn't be afraid of that area and should return on our own in the future."

I still stand by that comment, but yes, just like any other place that is "off the radar", please be aware of your surroundings and do it in the daytime. In no part of the tour did I recommend folks walk around at NIGHT. I hope I did not infer that at any point.

"That was all well and good as we stood there as a group of 15 or so people, but once the group dissipated and we were on our own, we were fair game and the sellers and beggers became more aggressive.

We made it to where we were going to wait for our ride and one of us split off to get some sodas while we waited. The man in line with him was shocked he was there at that time of day and kept telling him that he was not safe in that area alone. This was further reinforced by Filipino friends, who, when they heard we had been left there by our tour guide to wander alone after the tour was over, began listing off their own experiences at that market where people attempted to unzip their bags to get inside while our friends were haggling with a stall owner or attempting to pickpocket them."

Did those things happen to you that night? My deepest apologies if so. But re: comments by Filipinos. Yes, well these are Filipinos perhaps who also do not go to Quiapo at all as well and revolve thier life around Makati and places "on the radar". As I said, I still stand by the safety of the area IN THE DAYTIME. The place has improved considerably in the last five years. I can attest to that. I would never take people around an area that would endanger their well-being.

"This isn't a slam against the Philippines or Filipinos. There are areas of my own country I would think twice about going to and certainly would stay away from after dark. The end point of the Halo Halo/Downtown Express tour is one of those places."

Thank you for your letter, I agree with some of your points and I will try to my best to follow up any improvements that may be made.
