METANOIA BY GOLLY WOW

Well there goes the neighborhood. To the sound of much applause and a mini prayer rally. Angelo King, philanthrophist and the owner of Anito Lodge, the Philippines' largest chain of "short-time" sex motels, is once again showing us that he is repentant for causing much misery in many marriages by voluntarily closing another one of his establishments. This one just happens to be right across my building on M.H. del Pilar. So surreal yet sincere. Love it.

I used to live next to the Sta Mesa Anito Lodge. It was so easy to direct taxis there, great landmark. It will be missed when they finally are closed.

I totally agree with Ultraman's suggestion. It's so hard to find a structurally sound yet affordable apartment for rent in Malate! All the residential buildings want arm and leg while those within my range are fire hazards.

Anyway. Oh, so that's the story behind that banner. I've been wondering about it for about a week now--I pass by it everyday on my way home from work.

I read somewhere (NY Times, I think) that these motels in fact also get steady business from married couples, who need a nice place for romance, and who otherwise would have to put up with cramped quarters shared with relatives.

say what you want against angelo king. other than this he also dumped a lot of his own money in other hush-hush worthy projects. hypocrite? i call him brave. try turning your back on a (multi-)billion-peso business your family depends on and lets see how stern your stuff is made of. i don't think i have the balls to do what he did.

Are there other Anitos around, or has King closed them all? How many are left, if any? 'Cause that would really be following the Christian spirit, if he decided to lock up all the Anitos, profits be damned.

The Philippines is Christianity's answer to Iran.
I don't understand why religions are so disturbed by what people do with their genitals.
Don't the imams and the cardinals realize that if everyone did what they wanted and stopped fucking, they wouldn't have any more souls left to torment?

Well let's hope he repaints the damn thing in less garish colours this time.

hey last anonymous poster, i agree w you 1000%. The hierarchical Catholic Church is one of this country's biggest enemies and a major hindrance to our economic development.

Imagine being against birth control in a country of wretched starving people in the millions.

Easy for these cardinals to preach when they're getting their three squares a day from their comfy digs, all tax-free of course.

Obviously these holier-than-thou churchmen haven't spent a lot of time in the squatter areas and seen what real hunger is about. Sickening, really. It's the basic christian communities that're saving the Catholic faith, not the wankers in power in Manila or Rome.

"Obviously these holier-than-thou churchmen haven't spent a lot of time in the squatter areas"

This is such an incorrect statement. Are you sure?

10:57 AM
Blogger carlosceldran said...

True. Its a rash generalization. But on the other hand, it's rather apparent that the Philippine Catholic Church isn't achieving much when it comes to adressing the real issues surrounding poverty alleviation in this country. The hope really lies in the private sector with enlightened NGOs and other secular institutions. The PCC tends to let "faith" over ride logic in very many matters. Birth control, homosexuality, rights of women, are just a few of the matters they tend to be myopic about...

Anonymous gonzo said...

But this is my point, the "generalized" catholic church in this country is, as a whole, one big obstacle against progress in population control. The Church's position, which they enforce through their "moral power", is pretty ridiculous, and even cruel &inhuman, given today's realities in the Philippines.

"hey it's ok if you can't give your kids enough food to eat. let them go hungry. Too many people, not enough jobs? never mind. Just don't use condoms and don't go on the pill, ok? the more the merrier."

Put it this way: If Jesus came back down to earth today, where do you think he would stay, in the fancy Archbishop's palace in Mandaluyong, or the treasure-filled Vatican? Or would he choose to be with the people in an urban slum in Tondo or a favela in Sao Paolo? One guess.

So it is the BCC (basic christian community) people that are the true saviours of the Church, who most closely emulate the life of christ today, living and working within urban & rural poor communities. they see the ACTUAL realities, hence they formulate proper opinions, unlike as you say, the myopic traditional Church, detached from Third world reality and still living in the Dark Ages.

I worked with the Kings sometime in 1997 as a teacher when they decided to put up a li'l school in their office building. This was supposedly one of the fringe benefits that they offered to their employees. All their preschool kids get to avail of the school's services. Anyway, back then, Mr. King and family were already born-again Christians and the issue whether they would close down all their motels had been in consideration. However, Mr. King thought he still has moral obligations to his employees and shelved the idea for quite a time; I was glad he finally had the courage to do that- so brave of him! Imagine the millions he had to let go because of his GENUINE faith in the Lord. I don't think he is a hyprocrite- unlike the "modern-day Pharisees" in our churches. Closing down the Anito motels entailed such a huge sacrifice on the part of the Kings.

Hwah hwah. That is precious.

But what will the jeepney room represent then?

Really. I don't know why they just didnt turn them into real accomodations for seamen or low budget travelers instead. They already have the sheets and stuff and their lechon kawali is fabulous.

So I heard.

well i hear the latest is anito malate has been turned over to the victoria court group. It will remain a motel for horny short-timers after all. haha. maybe the anito guy's conscience got to him but business is still business i suppose. whatever it is, i think they are providing the working people a great service (rich guys book at the Mandarin, the Shang or other 5 star hotels), and they make money too. a win-win situation for all!

8:41 AM
Blogger carlosceldran said...

Really? Cool. I hear their lechon kawali rocks too. And victoria is also trying to market themselves as a "decent" place to stay nowadays too.

I read somewhere that it was the younger King who decided to close their "shops". But whoever it was, it doesn't matter. You just have to respect their standing by their faith however late it is, or however un-businesslike it is. As gleamed from comments above, business will still continue as there is demand!

In the US and maybe other countries, motels are really motels (mini hotel to me) as people move around so much they need a good place to stay. It's only in the Philippines where the name "motel" got a bad rap as they are used for quickies! (Not really, I was with a group of officemates before who had a "stag" party for a friend who's going to get married!).

Hey guys, those of you who blame population as the root and cause of poverty are damn wrong. What is wanting in our country is a sound political will and an openness to people to scientific facts about population and economic development. The government has to end corruption and misallocation of funds which are causing the problem, and not to mention the endless bickering and the narrow-sightedness approach of legislators. Hence, the educational sector, health, and housing of people suffer. Where does people's money go? We all know where, and the reason is very evident thanks to news and feedbacks by international agencies about graft and corruption in the country. And why is our economy still afloat? Thanks to our millions of OFWs abroad, tending rich countries that are short of workforce due to their population programs decades ago.

Thus, if you try to see things a little bit more scientifically (based on facts unadulterated by false propaganda)and remove such leaning towards unfounded generalizations, you will realize that population growth is the key to economic development. Still doubtful? Read the works of renowned economist Julian Simon, a nobel laureate, and Bernardo Villegas, a Harvard economist.

12:50 PM
Blogger carlosceldran said...

Sorry. I don't describe to Villegas' unproven theories and his theocratic ways.

Hello. Nobody is against population growth. We are just against unchecked, unbridled population growth. It's the RATE of growth that is a concern, not growth itself. A population that grows faster than the economy is a bad scene no matter how one looks at it.

Get it?

Its not actually Angelo King who closed the store but his son, Wyden King after being converted to Christianity, decided that the business was not pleasing to God.

His brother however still runs Victoria's Court.
