AHEM...
Just in case anyone is wondering. I am all for CHA CHA a.k.a.charter change. Why? If only to put those useless freaks in The Philippine Senate out of a job*. A.They are lazy as hell: Only two bills were passed this year and sent to the president (July 26, 2004 - April 5, 2006). B. They are relentlessly myopic: Their "investigations" are seriously delaying the completion of many important infrastructure projects. C. They quibble and quarrel like spoiled schoolchildren and display their political agenda in a way more juvenile than a cheerleaders meet: The Jamby-Enrile tiff certainly needs no introduction and their Happy Birthday Gloria statement was a stupid waste of our time. But most of all, D. They are spending our hard earned tax money: And shamelessly so to the tune of Php1,000,000.00 ++ a MONTH EACH: 'Nuff said. All morons, please raise your hand...

I'm for anything that takes away national elections, and just have people vote locally (up to the provincial level at most).
National elections are a circus -- it only favors those that can:
1. manipulate the results on a high level (Enrile)
2. use their celebrity status to get voted (Lito Lapid, Bong Revilla)
3. hire a celebrity to get voted (Jamby Madrigal)
4. have radio programs (Lim)
4. marry celebrities (like Francis Pangilinan, Ralph Recto)
The only Senator I have respect for is Joker Arroyo, even if I don't agree with some of his views.
your views are so myopic like the rest of the luli brigade! i guess being so high up in your elitistang ivory tower in your burgis malate capitalist enclave makes it hard for you to view what is really happening in the country. unlike you my eyes have been opened by the enlightened patriots that you dismiss as power-hungry, leftists, commies, mercenaries, anti-gma, etc. etc. etc... our opinion is the only one that matters, ergo yours is not true. our opinion will someday, some....day be accepted by the people. our opinion is the truth, as a matter of fact we have registered the word "truth" in the bureau of patents as owned by our group. our vision of a communist-rightist junta, este, a caretaker council pala will be in fruition soon enough, as soon as the "deathstar" is up and running, and the "laser" developed by what we call "alan parsons project" will destroy gma. since this cha-cha is that fascist gma's idea, even if senator, este congressman escudero was pushing something like that before, then we will never agree with it. progress be damned!!! we will torpedo this and anything that is not coming from our and our allies assho, i mean mouths!!! gma will never succeed! besides, the senate is the nest for our future leaders! one day, a great president will rule this land- president jamby, president jinggoy, president loi, president nene, president bong, president lito- hindi pala, kasama siya sa kabila eh. one day these people will carry us, nay, manhandle us to our own utopia. believe me! you will pay for this!
I think the whole cha cha situation is absurd, because personally I don't think the country will be better off with a new system of government. Granted that our current set up is not exactly great, but a change for the sake of changing(and installing JDV as prime minister)is never a solution. Unless and until we mature as a nation and stop voting for the bong revillas or the lito lapids, no amount of change in our current government system will facilitate any major advancement. The only thing I take comfort in is that good or bad it is still the majority of the Filipinos who get to decide who runs the country...not parliamentary delegates.
Mature as a nation....hmmm. Indeed. But what does that really mean?
Here's a little perspective. Having been born a few months after Marcos' martial law, and having read Malaya since 83, having actually been among the throng in Feb 86, and having lived in the US for the last 16 years, I think I've come up with a fairly good idea of what Anonymous (above) meant, at least to me.
I've figured out why America is the "greatest democracy in the world," and why the Philippines remains to be little changed politically since Marcos. BASICS. That's it. What your typical, unsophisticated, unclultured, unexposed, untraveled, red-neck American has is a BASIC IDEA OF WHAT THE GOVERNMENT IS THERE FOR--WHAT ITS DUTY IS, WHAT ITS RESPONSIBLE FOR, THE HIGH STANDARDS IT HAS TO UPHOLD FOR ITSELF AND THE PEOPLE IT SERVES.
I'll tell ya though that most Americans don't know much about, or really give a shit about, the complex political forces ebbing and flowing in their government, nor do most of them know the difference between a senator and a congressman. What they do know is what a dead rat smells like--bad policies, bad judgements, criminal corruption and irresponsibility are what they care about. In other words, the end-results of government. What's clear to the American public is what is WRONG/BAD/CRIMINAL governance vs. all that is good about good governance. It's crystal clear. ITS PART OF THE CULTURE.
That's why corruption is so rare and not GARAPAL in the US government. If a senator so much as takes a free lunch from a lobbyist, its logged by both his office and his poiltical opponent's. You can also sue the government here over it's own laws. How cool is that!?
Part of the culture....hmmm. Mature as a nation...hmmm Chomp on that a bit. How does the pinoy get to that next level where the right concept of government becomes part of his/her culture? Don't look at me. I'm just askin.
Bottom line: TEACH your kids the difference between good and bad and to not put up with shit.
Wow. I've rambled. It's 4:47 am, the baby was freaking out again so now I'm up with no hope of re-sleeping.
Wassup Carlos!

So, what is the solution?
Mr. Carlos Celdran, do you care of the stupidity of Bicameral Legislative Politicians or the voting System? I know they are no good, but do you think Cha-Cha is a solution to get abolish the Senate and let the House of Representatives vote for a new president? If so, Speaker De Venecia must have the Initiative on the dependence of leadership of the candidates. In Parliamentarianism, the unicameral legislation is voting for the people therefore we do not have the liberty of Suffrage. It is either of the 2. Can be both. Try to understand Parliamentarianism and compare it to a Republic. They are different in the Legislative branch. If the Charter Change is activated, everything is changed, even our constitution. Are we imitating the British on their form of government? Our government is in Political crisis and we may end up in a Darfur-like Environment. Argumentations and debates here and there. There is no Peace unless we stop the Political Crisis. The hope of the future of the nation depends upon its people and its leader. Crisis makes it worse. Why don't we do the same as Jose Rizal did: Writing. Us, Filipinos does not show the true meaning of nationalism and Patriotism to the world unless we do something about it. Those who are concerned of this must start thinking on restoring the nation to its redevelopment. Let us start preventing the worst to come. This is our Nation and it has to be maintained in its best condition. Thank You -Kyle
Admit it, Carlos. Youre batting for a monarchy. Not a bad idea, cept that Da King is dead, Apo Makoy is dead, and Imelda is busy making Powerpoint presentations.
Hey!!!
Those guys in the picture look like the same cha-cha escort's d'old swinging ladies hired at the sparkler's dance nights at the Polo Club during the 80's. Did'nt they used to call them "attorneys" ??? Don't tell me they funk'd their way to the top ???
Vat can I tell you ??? 'Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country" ???
Rainbows and shiny disco balls y'all !
kudos to you carlos. our present constitution does not allow us to take advantages of the present changes happening in the world due to globalisation. this is a step in the right direction. kudos again.
randy
your piece is amusing. write more often
cha-cha or not, change has to start with us.
I say let's leave GMA alone! Let her do her work and show and lead us to where she can as our president. I bet the senators are just ego-tripping; they wanted to show the people how powerful they can be. Unfortunately for them, in this country, real power is in the executive branch even though it's often said and legally so that it's co-equal with the legislative and judicial branches...
Fantastic talent for writing...keep it up...really cool...cheers
interesting points, and I do agree with them. However, charter change may not be the solution to this problem.
Since you(again, I agree with you) think that Congress are a bunch, well, a great majority of them are a bunch of morons then dissolving the senate and aggregating them into a single parliamentary body is like placingng the same rotten tomatoes in one big basket instead of two. Because there are no guarantees yet that the morons in both houses of congress will really be removed from power once Charter Change pushes through.
Ced! well said! And really, I was laughing my heart out when I looked the photo entitled "All morons, please raise your hand" I wish L. Estrada and Angara were raising their hands too! Very well said. very well said! keep it up!
hm, not a bad idea, switching to a monarchy. i'm sure Thailand or Malaysia have surplus princes or rajahs they can loan us to be coronated. then again, i wouldn't be surprised if the borrowed nobility freak out and hightail it back to their old fiefdoms once the senate starts doing its old 'inquisitions in aid of (non)legislation' act again. sigh. seriously, if the odd bedfellows that pass for an opposition over here succeed in regaining power, i'd suggest you finalize your emigration plans. or go to Cebu and convince Governor Garcia to secede.
Sigaw ng Bayan? It is really the Bulong from Malacanang. And you support their cause just because you want to abolish the Senate? If there's anything that's myopic, it is the absurd view that we should support cha-cha only because we want to abolish the Senate! Have you read the proposed constitutional provisions? If you haven't, I suggest you should.
The problem is not the Senate, Mr. Celdran. It is Gloria and her bunch of rabid lapdogs who refuse to give up the power they didn't have in the first place. The Senate wasting taxpayer's money? Go ask Gloria if she is not.
bystander,
Jinggoy is that you?
anonymous,
Raul Lambino is that you? Or JDV perhaps?
Why isn't Loi raising her hand in that picture?
