IN MEMORIAM...

FOR YOUR INFORMATION...

Remember this post? Well, that lovely theater that I mentioned, The Deluxe Chinese Movie Theater, has now gone by way of The Odeon, The Avenue Theater, and The Galaxy. While nobody was looking nor caring, it was demolished and is now a gated a parking lot. Tsk. Tsk. Tsk. Pretty soon I'll have to phase out my Binondo and Chinatown tours. It's just getting way too fricking ugly on that side of town to be worth touring.

I just read in the paper that Binondo has the most well to do people in the entire country.

Why doesn't it show? It's one of the dirtiest, dangerous, ugliest areas in the city

Isn't it ironic?

i'm with you carlos, its just so alarming that we're losing all of these Art Deco buildings around the metro. How sad.

Structures like these also have life...

If they could only scream to us and beg. Poor buildings.

History indeed. Sad.

I just posted an entry about Capitol Theater in Escolta. It is an art deco building designed by Juan Nakpil. Will they be tearing this down soon as well?

look, just because binondo is teeming with chinoys doesnt mean it has the most well-to-do people in the country. i believe its a toss-up between dasmarinas village and ayala alabang. in any case, it is sad this place is torn down, and the other theater- king's i believe, looks like its going to get the axe eventually. back in the day, they were the only ones playing chinese movies in manila, and this is where we binondo kids got to see our sock-chop kung-fu movies. these moviehouses hasnt been used for decades kasi. thanks to the shoebox malls we all patronize.

It's so sad that these old theaters are being torn down, and to think that these hold some history in them(hell, I didn't know that Galaxy was designed by Pablo S. Antonio. All I knew was that it was the movie theater my mom brought me to whenever a new Terence Hill/Bud what's-his-name film was showing when I was a kid.) Also, I read somewhere that one of the oldest fire stations in Manila was found along Ongpin (near Plaza Sta. Cruz) before it was torn down too some years back. Tsk tsk.

Ideally, you should be in charge of beautifying and preserving historical landmarks around the country.

I have not seen anyone else with your passion and genuine love for our architectural and historical gems.

Sayang,really.

Ah, well. In the end, these are earthly treasures that we must eventually let go of...

You really should be the head of the NCCA or of Intramuros at least...
