WHEE! WHEE! WHEE!
Well, whaddaya know? I am on BBC. They just aired "Sex and Religion in Manila" on their show, "Explore" and it seems that I am the opening act. Cool. It was done a few months ago. I think it's cool how their host, Seyi Rhodes, pronounces my name as "Keldran" instead of "Seldran" and it seems that I had a bit of a pot belly back then. Hmm. Note to self. More sit-ups. Part one above.
But I digress. Anyhoo, I'm really thrilled that RH Bill 5043 is finally reaching international attention. I was afraid that our campaign might lose steam but this feature has given our movement confidence and the strength to forge on until EVENTUAL victory. But even if we are making leeway, on a personal level, I'm totally frustrated about the many delays hindering the bill's immediate passage. Hmph! It seems that BBC thinks our population explosion and lack of women's health services are reaching catastrophic proportions, but Philippine Congress does not. It's really enough to make you heave. Part two above.
So watch this special, get angry and prepare to spit on the face of any politician who is stupid, myopic, and selfish enough to oppose the RH Bill. Part three above.
That's all for now. See you all at Transitio Manila 1945 on March 7 at 9:00pm. Cheers.

ZOMG! that lito atienza is SIRA-ULO! thank god the whole world knows now.
I know. He sounds really bad here. Well. As of late, most anti RH folk are sounding really out of touch and ridiculous. Atienza ain't alone on this one. Just wish Congress would finally hurry the f*** up and pass the damned bill already.
Spread this video around the world!
Shame the government and politicians for Corruption and Rape of the public.
Heartbreaking to see real people face to face in such overwhelming poverty.
Birth control is just one of the problems poor Filipinos must face, the other is changing their "mind set" through EDUCATION and PUBLIC CAMPAIGN.
So depressing!
Was disturbed to hear that "it's not a matter of what the people want" and can't help but wonder why we would need the military power that a large population supposedly generates, but I guess it's all good as long as we're "happy", huh?
Kudos to you for everything you're doing to help get this bill passed Carlos!
Hope the people opposing the bill will stop stalling.
Congratulations Carlos! it was a great report, very unbiased, not pushy and so very realistic and hard-hitting at the same time.
I wish to thank you, from a Filipino living abroad who seem helpless at the fate of our kababayans when it comes to this issue. The issue of bearing children as if God were to come down one day and say, "here is your reward for bearing the most children!"
It is a vicious cycle. I hope for all our sakes, that this bill passes, flourishes and nurtures the helpless poor filipino.
But the real issue at hand,is the "Catholic filipino/poor filipino mindset" that no one (Vatican included) wishes to address.
If the catholic church stands contrary to this bill, then they must personally pay the price of educating, feeding and clothing each individual born from the plight of being underpriviledged. More like putting their money where there words are. Not just punishing the poor helpless filipino who merely strives to follow the catholic church's wishes in the hopes of taking part in the Lord's salvation.
I wish I could do more to help you, help pass this bill. I wish I could do something for the April's of the Philippines. I applaud you and your fellow fighters for this, maybe one day the Philippines will not be used as pawns by the vatican anymore.
More power to you, love to your family (esp. Dr. Celdran). Thanks for listening to an old friend's woes.
love,
gina wilson-beer and family
Very well done Carlos! The reportage makes me so angry at the Catholic church and the corrupt politicians...as in i am fuming angry and feel helpless over here! Their mind-set is so stupid and ancient and Psychotic! Please keep up the good work in getting to the heart of our social ills and being the hero for us all. What an amazing example you are to everyone in championing the cultural ressurection of not only Manila but the Fili as a whole lot AND as well as the population issue. You're my hero! Take care and may all the superficial rotten politicians and devils in religious dress burn in hell forever!!!!!!
I am in the U.K at the mo' and saw " Explore Sex & Religion in Manila" last night on BBC. Carlos, it was an incredibly accurate piece of journalism, aided by your most erudite points, delivered as only you can!! Interesting opinions from Lito Atienza and Joseph Estrada!! Thought Seyi Rhodes did an amazing job covering a complex subject.......Sandy
yes i am mad enough that i'm ready to spit on the faces of these self-serving and stupid politicians.
it is sad that the old preists and politicians can't see the problems in front of them and are in denial about them. But, April inspite of her youg age, offers hope because she is much wiser than these old dinosaurs.
Hi Carlos,
Thanks for bringing this to our attention. You can really see both the illogical as well as selfish opinions of dissenters like Lito Attienza. Illogical because other than spouting religious dogma he has nothing else to back up his position. Selfish because I see the mass poor as the political base of people like him so of course he does not want this problem solved.
Who is the main proponent of this bill? Is there any place to read about what its about, who introduced it and how far it is from being passed?
I absolutely agree re: that hypocrite Atienza.
If he was truly a follower of the teachings of Christ. He would not steal.

shut up Atienza! stop the systematic exploitation and abuse of the masses.
narrow minded judgmental fraudster
stop using your crooked double standard morality
Congratulations! you were very clear. You made good points! I wish this documentary will be aired in the Philippines.
It doesn't matter what the people want spiel of Lito Atienza is disgusting. What a backward mentality.
Carlos- congratulations on your contributions to the BBC documentary. I was in disbelief to hear the former mayor's prehistoric point-of-view and the relationship he viewed with a more populous country being synonymous of its power. So where is the power?? Such a sad and powerful testimony of the girl and her family. You're doing a great job Carlos!

Carlos --
This BBC clip and your strong, strong interview, was awesome. This clip should be seen around the world, and should win a Pulitzer. I am recommending it to all my good friends and Obama supporters (although I realize we do not have any responsibility for Manila and the Philippines).
I have posted this link on my own blog.
Best wishes,
Bruce
I've always admired docus from BBC. Thanks for posting this Carlos. The effect on me was quite different from what most have posted here. I thought, "how can I encourage the rich of Manila to donate a portion of their food everyday to these poverty-stricken people?" The DSWD should have some sort of soup kitchen program in every barangay where the "rich" of that barangay would learn to share their material blessings. This plus other solutions alongside the contraceptive bill. I hope that they just don't depend on the contraceptive bill because we are just making some western drug manufacturer richer again, and again, and again.
Lito Atienza: Its not a matter of what the people want. Leaders must decide whats really good (for them).
You cow, this is a democracy not a fiefdom!!!
And I must say- that Seyi Rhodes is a beautiful man! Hot!
I would like to comment on Atienza's remarks and one of the priest-- I think is Ignacio--I dont remember. When leaders are the sole deciders of national economic, the government is NOT democratic but AUTOCRATIC. First learn what democracy means and autocratic government. Atienza makes an assumption that in Western Culture, use of contraceptives produces couples who are "family destroyers," which lead to divorce, gay marriage, and abortion. As a Filipino raised in Western thought, I know that there are many reasons for family splits in America. Studies show that families split more so because of financial issues NOT use of contraceptives. Second, do not make a comparison between Western Cultures and Oriental Cultures. Western cultures are individualistic and Asian Cultures are communal oriented. These two cultures are not comparable. I disagree on the priest's comment on contraceptives as an attack against the poor. Yes, there are many underlying issues on poverty in Phil, but theology should not be the basis for national government and economics. Philippines should exercise the separation of church and state as a democratic country.
Anyway, what do I know I am just a passerby. Thanks for taking giant steps to make Manila a beautiful city once again.
I'm sorry - I was put off by how gorgeous Seyi Rhodes is. :) Lucky you to even get close to him! ha ha ha ha
